聯邦國徽是在1912年9月12日由喬治五世欽定並御賜。
盾牌上半部；從左到右，是新南威爾士州，維多利亞州和昆士蘭州等地方的州徽標誌。
在盾牌下半部；從左至右依次為：南澳大利亞，西澳大利亞州和塔斯馬尼亞州的州徽標誌。
在盾牌兩旁的紅袋鼠和鴯鶓標誌，不僅是在澳洲的原生動物，且經常在國際間代表著澳大利亞聯邦國。
然而，
聯邦政府卻從沒有給紅袋鼠和鴯鶓發給屬於澳大利亞官方動物的證明。
當初在選定紅袋鼠和鴯鶓做為國徽標誌的主要原因；是因為人們在那個年代時，一直都誤以為紅袋鼠和鴯鶓是只有前進，而沒有後退動作的動物。
只有前進；即象徵著進步。
實際上；有人經過仔細觀察，發現紅袋鼠和鴯鶓也是會有後退的動作，只是很少被人們見到而已。
在盾牌後方背景中的花，是澳大利亞的國花（英语：Golden Wattle），中文名稱是金合歡。
